The White House has announced that India is dead. Pakistan has denied responsibility.
India was an 18-year-old black American Shorthair cat. She was quite famous, particularly in India, where her name touched off protests during Bush's early White House years. As I mentioned in a column back then, some folks apparently found it insulting that the name of our motherland could be heard around the White House in sentences such as these:
--- "India, stop licking the First Lady's feet. That's the president's job."
--- "India, please stop fighting with the dogs. Neither of them is named Pakistan."
--- "Does anyone know where India is? The president has been looking for several hours, but can't find it on the map."
According to the White House website, India was named for former Texas Ranger baseball player, Ruben Sierra, who was called "El Indio." She loved to eat tuna-flavored kitty treats and take naps under the bed. Democrats may not be surprised to learn that her favorite sport was "hiding from owners."
She must have lived a good life. Not many cats get to pee ... I mean, be ... in the White House.
